As more visitors are drawn to the beach of Hanlan’s Point, a shift in perceived roles needs to happen. While City employees and various organisations work hard at maintaining the environmental and social integrity of our park, its long-term preservation also depends on a renewed sense of stewardship for beachgoers.

In recent years, erosion has had a devastating effect on the shoreline. Certain types of behaviors have threatened the inclusive and welcoming atmosphere that Hanlan’s is historically known for. Litter has become an issue, accumulating on the sand and surrounding areas; disturbing the local ecosystems and making Hanlan’s Point a lot less beautiful.

Keep Hanlan’s Beautiful is a community-led initiative that aims to inspire for collective care of our space, welcome to our page.

NO DUNES = NO MORE BEACH

3 SIMPLE WAYS TO KEEP OUR BEACH BEAUTIFUL

#1. Stay Off the Sand Dunes

The sand dunes play a major role in the natural defense against beach erosion. In most of the southern section of Hanlan’s Point Beach, without the dunes; there is no beach. While they support a wide variety of plants and wildlife species, they rely on a specific type of grass to stay in place and prevent the sands from shifting.

The grass, called marram grass, has deep roots and is well adapted to its environment, but is quickly killed if trampled on. For this reason, it is important to stay off the dunes and let nature recover at its own pace.

#2. Be Mindful of Other People

Be mindful of those around you, especially when visiting a crowded beach. Politely asking a neighbour whether they mind you playing music on a portable speaker, or respecting the space of someone who arrived before you, are simple ways to make new friends and leave a good impression. On the other hand, other behaviours, tend to have the opposite effect.

#3. Keep the Beach Clean!

Bigger crowds can often lead to a lesser sense of individual responsibility. Bringing a dedicated container or bag to keep track of your waste makes it easier to clean up when leaving the beach. Remember, it is everyone’s responsibility to keep the sand and surrounding areas clean, and doing so sets a respectful example that can inspire others.

Did you know?

Cigarette butts are one the most damaging and persistent forms of litter on Ontario beaches? While we do not yet know how long they take to biodegrade, they eventually break down into microplastics and release dangerous chemicals into the environment. A single cigarette butt can contaminate up to 1 liter of water. Ingested by wildlife, it can cause internal blockages, becoming lethal for many species such as birds and marine animals. It is understood that smoking should be seen as a personal choice, but one should be mindful of setting aside and disposing of cigarette butts properly when leaving the beach.
